Shaving Tips for men

Firstly, never use an electric razor! Always wet shave, the extra few minutes is so worth it!
Use a facial scrub, preferably in the shower, to open the pores in the hot steam. The scrub exfoliates the skin, removing dead skin cells, lifts the facial hairs and reduces the risk of ingrowing hairs. Use all over the face avoiding the eyes of course! (If you are using a safety razor, you will need to remove all traces of face scrub before the next step).
We recommend The Shave Doctor’s Facial Scrub at £4.95 for 150ml.

Next apply a pre-shave oil. If you do nothing else, this really makes a difference! The shave
oil lubricates the skin, and softens the hair, preparing the beard perfectly for your shave.
We recommend The Shave Doctor’s Shave Oil at only £3.95 is well worth the money – most shave oils come in 15ml bottles – and this is a far superior product in a handy 50ml tube, with lemon tea tree essential oil, it has a pleasantly masculine yet natural fragrance.

Straight on top of the shave oil, you need your shave crème, we don’t use gels or foams, a crème really is the best product to use to maintain the moisture level your skin needs throughout the shave. The ideal way to apply the crème is with a brush. A brush really lifts the hairs ready for your razor, and you will actually use less with a brush. If you don’t have a brush, then work the crème into the beard using the tips of your fingers. You are trying to get the crème under the hairs and hold them away from the skin, ready for the razor, something you can’t achieve by simply smoothing the crème on to your face. We recommend the Men-u Barbiere brush at just £7.95, and Shave Doctor Shave Creme at £6.95 for 150ml

Now you’re ready to shave. Use a good quality razor like a King of Shaves Azor or a Gillette Fusion. To get the best results we do two shaves, first the down-shave, then the up-shave! The down-shave, as it suggests involves shaving with “the grain” or hair growth direction.
After applying more shave crème, the up-shave, against the grain will give you the closest shave possible. As you up-shave, you can feel with your fingertips, where there is still stubble and it’s important to notice the direction of the growth on different parts of your face. It may not be what you expect, and to get the best shave, you will need to shave against this direction. Practice makes perfect!

After your shave, we recommend a clean, cold face cloth, to close the pores and sooth the skin after the razor.

Finally, a good moisturiser! This is so important to replace the moisture in your skin after the shave. We recommend the Shave Doctor’s Moisturazor at £8.95 for 150ml or £4.95 for 50ml. This is not only the best men’s moisturiser on the market today but represents superb value for money. Compare the price and size of Moisturazor to other moisturisers on the market. The only one that comes close in quality, in our opinion, is Elemis daily moisture boost at over £20 for just 50ml.

“But I’m a man – I don’t need to moisturise! – What are the benefits?”

The list of benefits is huge! Try these for starters: Reduces irritation from shaving, makes you look younger and reduces wrinkles and blemishes.  Moisturised skin uses less shave oil, shave crème and any other product that would be absorbed by dry skin! So you can use better products, like Shave Doctor, and they will last longer

For the best in shaving, book an Ultimate Wet Shave at The Compton Barber Shop. Hopefully you will learn a lot from the experience that you can start to use when shaving at home. You will also get chance to experience The Shave Doctor’s full range of products that we use exclusively for our Ultimate Wet Shave. Why not treat yourself to a Shave Doctor travel kit containing all four products in 50ml travel sizes for just £14.95.

A final point - always wear a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 to protect your skin from UVA and UVB light, especially in the summer, working outdoors, or on holidays. The sun causes skin damage and ageing of the skin, don’t risk it!
